Good memories. It was such a treat to have my parents drop me in a Barnes and Noble and pick up 2600, crawl into a comfy corner and spend a few hours reading what I only could only partially even grasp. Luckily there were so many other resources you could wander an aisle over to the comp sci section and access.
Abbie Hoffman and the Anarchists Cookbook were also a few shelves down, and yet here we are worried about kids on the internet, its harder now to come across these topics "accidentally" that it was in the library nerding out.
All the worlds info is now accessible theoretically, yet I feel it's somehow harder to discover anything novel than it was back then, especially for the young.
The last paragraph reminds me a little of the short story The Library of Babel. Where all possible permutations of ‘knowledge’ is available and it all becomes useless/impossible to find.
Seems like only yesterday I was checking payphones for dialtones. I learned about the phreak scene on bbs boards as a kid in the 80s. Still the definition of a hacker in my mind.
The incredible background effects with no JS enabled have me both pondering and accepting of this fantastic display.
It's just an animated webp. https://phreak.ing/static/bg.webp The correct amount of technology for an animated background. Very refreshing
It also changes quite a bit if you enter *#06# as the number.
Looks like the animated background image was sourced from: https://pislices.art/GIFS
+1 to that. I didn't even feel like doing anything I was just there flabbergasted by the background
Same. I, for one, welcome our Phreaking overlords.-
Bonus tip: If you dig the backgound (and, who would not), do yourself a favour and try the easter egg - see further downthread ...
I learned about phreaking picking up 2600 in Barnes & Noble‘s when I was a kid. Those were exciting times. Now everything is so damn boring.

I met a lot friends at Barnes & Noble back in the day.
I'm still friends with most of them!
99th karma. Thank you for that.

Being the youngest of five, I had to fight for phone access so 2600 had a much higher bandwidth for me. :)
I couldn’t get past the DTMF captcha. My device’s microphone didn’t listen to its own audio and I was lazy to get a second device.
Did anyone register? What happens after, do you get a sort of WebRTC P2P voice number? I like this UI/UX a lot but no idea what this is haha
Easter egg if you type in *#06# :)

If it had CCITT5 tones with the KP tones and a few seize tone options I’d know it was made by a kindred spirit.
I just made a line on the number "311" with a IVR you can throw into a trunk using 2600, then KP+Num+ST to dial Phreaknet numbers
It's asking me to play tones into the mic... Sorry no dtmf handy lol What is going on here?
Just open the website on your phone to emit the tones
That's how I did it and it didn't do anything said invalid or something.
how to use it?
What is this?
seems good.
Not sure what this is supposed to do?
same
likley legit.
