> Googlebooks are the Google's replacement for Chromebooks, the web-centric computers it launched in 2011 and which run ChromeOS....
The newer Googlebook range uses more powerful processors than their predecessors, plus a new OS called Googlebook OS that bakes in Google’s Gemini AI – a product the Chocolate Factory is very keen to see succeed as the great AI land grab continues.
...If you buy a Chromebook today, updates will end in 2034 eight years into the future
So they have introduced a major change and said any older Chromebooks bought going forward will only get 8. So its not a retrospective reduction for existing customers.
Sounds reasonable.
8 years is still a long time for a cheap Chromebook.
If you bought a Chromebook a month ago, updates for Chrome OS will also end in 8 years, not 10; Google promises you will get a new OS for the device [0]:
> ChromeOS devices will continue to receive regular updates and security patches through mid-2034. For qualifying devices purchased today whose 10-year support lifecycle extends beyond 2034, Google is committed to supporting your transition to Googlebook OS, with many devices offering direct migration paths.
Large organisations don’t buy a single batch of machines then call it a day. If an organisation standardised on Chromebooks because of the support period, they will still need to buy new machines and those won’t get the support period they had expected.
The worst part is that Google does not have full MDM management for Googlebooks out of the box and won't have that until "late 2027". That means these can't even be deployed to enterprise until proper policies and MDM frameworks even get built for the OS.
I see orgs flipping back to Macbook Neos now. Google just handed Apple the education market back on a light blue and green platter.
are you saying google is betraying them unless they sell new chromebooks with 10y chromeOS contracts going forward until the heat death of the universe?
No one here is saying companies need to offer products forever. They do need to honor their commitments made in the past. For purchasers who bought more than two years ago and those who purchase after today, there's no issue. They are getting what was promised prior to their purchase. People who bought in 2024 or before will get 10 years. People who buy tomorrow will get 8 years.
The only issue is for those who purchased Chromebooks in the past two years. They purchased based on a promise of ten years support. Now Google is retroactively clawing back two years of that support. If today Google had announced 2036 as end of support instead of 2034, there'd be no problem.
From my understanding of the article, it sounds like ChromeOS support is getting pared back for those devices, but the devices themselves should still be supported, albeit via a (planned but not yet in existence) migration path to GooglebookOS.
Although tbh, I've not really used either in anger, so I can't really comment on if that is a raw deal or not. (Beyond the usual dislike of change that will always be encountered).
Extremely sarcastic take but - shouldn't the 10x productivity boost of LLMs like their own in-house Gemini make maintaining software easier?
Nothing in terms of feature release / quality / maintenance I am seeing out Big Software would lead me to believe there's been any productivity increase.
They can't even add "respect the user's preferred language" to the AI assist prompt in Google Search - I've reported it countless times. Turns out, looking up local places/names/etc, does not mean I speak that language. They can't seem to add light/dark support to Gmail despite prefers-color-scheme CSS media feature being present in browsers for at least 6 years). I have zero remaining faith in Google's ability to do anything.
No. If your engineers can produce more ROI working on another product, it does not matter that now they are 10x more efficient. They will also be 10x in the other, more worth it product
I assume the support range is determined by firmware updates. I know ChromeOS struggled with supporting devices whose components no longer received support.
There would still need to be money to make from doing so and a will to do it.
My company has a shitty old defunct group management portal that has been twice superseded and is finally getting shut down. But we have LLMs, why not maintain it in perpetuity? Because it's shit, nobody likes it, there are other options, it would still cost someone's time just to follow all the processes we have to do releases and keep things running, security testing, yada yada.
Adding more years of support to some shitty old thing is certainly going to cost them more than it makes them.
I know plenty of people who use Apple products such as iPhones and Macs and have to stop using them and throw them into landfill basically because there are no further security updates, although the device works fine and is fast enough for their needs.
Shortening security updates absolutely has an environmental impact.
This. I have an old 2012 Intel Retina Macbook Pro which is already several MacOS versions behind and I’m unable to update it through normal means any longer. It works fine and it still has the best looking screen of any laptop I ever owned.
I keep it at my parents’ house and I maybe use it 3/4 times per year, but it’s enough for my needs when I’m visiting and it feels wasteful to throw it away or store it for good. I fully understand that it is a 14yo machine and it is unreasonable for a company to support old hardware indefinitely, but still, it does feel like a waste.
>it is unreasonable for a company to support old hardware indefinitely
No it absolutely is not, and especially not for a company like Apple. A bunch of hippies make Linux drivers for museum grade hardware. The only reason Apple does this is to sell you new crap that looks and works the same as the old crap.
In the 90's and 00's a 10 year old computer was literally unusable. Today it's different, despite everything that web devs do to ruin it. My home file server is using 2011 hardware (except hdds).
I wouldn't even say 8 years is "old" for a computer anymore, right around Intel's Haswell generation we crossed a threshold of cores and performance and computers became Good Enough. You can see it with Android and iOS tablets too they last a very long time, and of course Apple Silicon leaves no doubt.
I have a 12 year old Acer C720 that while obviously doesn't run chromeos anymore, it's still useful as a super durable 12'' linux machine.(thankfully it's intel based)
It road around in a backpack while cycling around campus, survived multiple bike spills, knocked off tables half a dozen times.
Really sad we can't get something like this anymore.
I would be stunned to find that less-affluent districts weren't acquiring hand-me-down Chromebooks or stretching their fleet's lifespan for as long as they could manage. Would love to believe that things have gotten better since the, "History books still mention the USSR," (true) urban legends of my Millennial youth, but I somehow doubt it.
I live in probably one of the poorest districts in my state. Google basically gives these things away for free for the management contract on top of the gsuite contracts the districts get.
I also have two X220 machines, and I use them more than the X200 now. They still work perfectly, while my X200 is getting flakey. (Although with its SSD and 8GB of RAM, it runs Alpine very well indeed and could be a daily driver.)
The X220 has a slightly shallowed screen; that's a weakness. But mine are 100% usable: between them, I run Haiku, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Ubuntu, and Pop OS, and all of them go like stink and are daily-drivable on this 2011 hardware.
I have an X230 which was upgraded with a quad-core CPU (i7-3612qe), 16gb RAM, SSD, and 1080p screen, and it makes a pretty decent around-the-house laptop. I'd rate it pretty highly; it's not quite as fast as my 6th gen X1 Carbon but the X1 is starting to get quite flaky.
If that is good enough, I will put up with a bad screen.
Good speakers is very nice to have, I admit, but I do not do podcasts or videos. I do listen to the radio a lot, however.
I do not own a single laptop with 32GB RAM. That I don't care about. My desktop does, but the biggest laptops are 24GB, which was massively cheaper. Most are 16GB which I find enough for even quite intensive use.
"Best build quality" is the most important part. If you never got to handle one you are missing out. Glass and Solid milled aluminum. Silicone wrist pads and grip. 4:3 screen ratio. high quality keyboard. Rock solid 360 screen hinge.
Hardware is essentially a high end cellphone from 2016, which isn't a powerhouse but still does everything I would ask of a chromebook in 2026. Batteries are all generally going well.
Repair-ability is a challenge, but I want to work on that. You can mod it to run windows or linux. Stock it runs chromeos, linux subsystem, and android apps. It has a "feature" where if you keep in developer mode it auto-wipes itself if anybody else tries to boot it (hitting anything but the un-indicated ctrl-d at the boot screen initiates powerwash). Great for international travel.
It isn't a good choice for "power" but dominates every other aspect of "being a good laptop". It was too expensive for the chromebook market back then, but now you can pick them up for $200 and hand them to your parents and stop getting asked to fix their computer.
I still don't get the point of Chromebooks. You need the exact same hardware as a real laptop, you don't get to save on anything, in fact it's worse, since browsers are usually heavier than real apps.
But you get less functionality, and have to hack into it even if you can to make it your own.
They're even worse for browsing, as you can only install addons and adblockers allowed by Google, which are deliberately gimped.
At least we get to enjoy freedom on our PCs - the smartphone-ification of computers is a worrying trend (this applies to games consoles too).
> I still don't get the point of Chromebooks. You need the exact same hardware as a real laptop, you don't get to save on anything, in fact it's worse, since browsers are usually heavier than real apps.
If by "Save on anything" you mean saving files, you are completely wrong.
There is a filesystem that you can save any data to. If you use the Linux VM you can run nearly any typical Linux software (including any of the in vogue coding agents). You can even run llama.cpp or ollama with GPU acceleration, though you might be constrained by the laptop level GPU and Memory constraints.
There are completely offline apps and tools available (via Android, Linux, and even offline PWAs).
You can even write your own apps and run them only locally on the any of the above 3 runtimes.
Of course, I wouldn't do these on a school-specced Chromebook that costs $200, but $700 Chromebook would easily suffice.
If you mean "Save money", then that's wrong too. ChromeOS is by default more lightweight than traditional Desktop OS's because of the relative lack of legacy cruft and the managed runtime. Even the Linux distro it includes is very stripped down by default (although you can bog it down by running too much stuff like any computer)
The only thing you can't do is run Windows or Mac specific software, but if you need that, ChromeOS was never a consideration anyways.
> Of course, I wouldn't do these on a school-specced Chromebook that costs $200, but $700 Chromebook would easily suffice.
I have used linux VMs on a an old $200 Chromebook (with a $50 Costco discount) and it's perfectly fine, Linux can go a long way with only 4GB RAM/32GB eMMC. It doesn't receive updates anymore, so I use the latest Firefox from Devian repos to browse the Internet instead of the stale Chrome that has many open CVEs
> ChromeOS is by default more lightweight than traditional Desktop OS
Maybe? The shipping ChromeOS on the Lenovo ThinkPad C13 Yoga Chromebook (R7 3700C/16GB RAM/NVMe disk) is a dog. The system is nearly unusable. Can't even play YouTube videos properly, lags out with a few tabs, and maxes out the fan and practically freezes once you start trying to run serious Linux applications under Crostini. However, once blasted with MrChromebox firmware, and loaded with openSUSE, it runs very adequately. In fact, I'm posting this from inside Firefox with 17 tabs open, plus two instances of Okular and a kernel build running in the background, with no issue.
My wife and my 9yo have Chromebooks. Their needs are met. I (mostly) don't have to worry about data hygiene.
I'm sure my kid will want a "real" computer at some point, but by then he will hopefully have enough maturity to keep it secure. My wife couldn't care less.
I've used and defended ChromeOS for power-users for a while now, though I'm rather less interested in it after the last year or two, and especially with this "Googlebook" push.
The good of it is, you get a state-of-the-art browser, constantly auto-updated against any security vulnerabilities and locked down against any type of hacking or malware, with first-class support for audio, video, bluetooth, and things like that that have tended to be hit-or-miss with Desktop Linux on bare metal. Contrary to lots of tech community noise, UBlock Lite continues to work fine and is perfectly adequate for blocking ads. You can indeed save local files and use them fine.
You also get a full Linux OS with command-line and desktop apps working fine. Pretty much everything you could want to do Linux-y works. Android apps work locally too, if that's helpful to you. So it seems, or seemed, like the best of both worlds to me.
Alas, nowadays, Google seems rather less interested in it, and Googlebooks sound much more limited to me. Meanwhile, Apple also discourages, though has not blocked (yet?) installing apps outside their App Store, and wants you to keep all your data and messaging in the Apple ecosystem. Microsoft is trying to do the same regarding apps, and apparently, at least some configurations of Windows 11 will force you to log in to a OneDrive account and then upload your files to it, delete them locally (!), and try to bill you to access them if they take up more than a gig or something.
I already decided months ago anyways that my next laptop is going to be a Framework running native desktop Linux, since it's much easier to troubleshoot in the LLM era, and it seems like every other desktop OS just keeps getting worse.
> I still don't get the point of Chromebooks. You need the exact same hardware as a real laptop, you don't get to save on anything,
In a time when buttons are too expensive, avoiding having a windows key is a valuable savings :P
I've purchased a few chromebooks over time, and probably need to get one more for my mother-in-law. For her, the limitations of ChromeOS are a feature --- it's much harder for her to screw it up when she's on a call with fake support than with windows and she hadn't run anything other than a browser on her windows computer anyway.
Certainly the core hardware is basically the same, but fluffy optional hardware tends to be left off or lower cost for Chromebooks. Many manufacturers offer laptops without an OS, but you usually miss out on pricing promotions so you're paying for Windows even if you don't want it. Chromebooks get pricing promotions and firesales, so careful shopping gets you pretty inexpensive computers that are good enough to do what they need to do.
I don't like the forced expiration, and it's especially brutal when you purchase a new device late in its model life ... but I do try to purchase models that can use 3rd party bios replacement scripts so you can use them for other stuff when the OS is too far expired. Kind of derpy to have to bios replace to run ChromeOS flex to keep doing what you were doing, but such is life. Sometimes the device doesn't live that long, and that's fine too. Some of the chrombooks are cheaper simply because they have a very tiny SSD, and few of them are user replaceable, which makes prospects for running Windows later in life pretty bleak, but Windows is pretty bleak these days anyway. :P
I get your point, but in my experience, predatory ads are the most dangerous things elderly need to watch out for.
It's absolutely appalling just how many ads show up on the most boring and mainstream sites, and just how many of them are just straight up fraud or scams. I think ad blocking is a fundamental internet safety issue, if you want to hand a laptop to an older relative, and ChromeOS doesn't do anything against scam subscriptions.
When they were dirt cheap they were excellent for education. Most edu-tech apps are webapps and endpoint management on these was (presumably) a breeze if you had G-Suite/Workspace, a perfect combination for budget-constrained schools. Same with state governments.
Use case scenario that it fills perfectly for me: I'll spend a lot of evenings on my back porch streaming local sports or Youtube.
The short math on my last refurbished Chromebook would have been cents per hour of use I got out of it.
Battery life: Granted I'm using the screen at it's lowest possible (stock) brightness in my scenario, but I get at the very least 6 hours per charge on a 17" display.
If something catastrophic were to happen to it I'm more than happy to replace a ~$100 piece of hardware that's serving one dedicated function for me, and there's 0 data of consequence that I'd be losing. And it's sustained light amounts of rain with no side effects.
Yeah pretty much this. Google had a pretty successful effort to sell these devices as part of a managed solution: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/13/technology/google-educati...
Im guessing it was pretty easy for teachers (who they reached out to bypassing school procurement officers) or IT to manage.
Honestly, I used use a cheap chromebook throughout college since it was a fantastic linux device. Cheap (bought secondhand), Very little compute power, but fantastic keyboard, battery life, durable, light, and it ran coreboot. Super easy to unlock too for the early devices. You just had to remove the read protect screw. Obviously thats very niche though
Did you ever use GalliumOS? I remember catching a sale on an Acer Chromebook and then flashing that Ubuntu based distro onto. Uses that laptop for 5ish years before I turned it into a home server.
There's simply no real reason that a mobile device can't function as a desktop from a technical level either in software or hardware. Simply dock your phone or it could be even wireless. Boom! Go from mobile experience to desktop experience. It seems they want to cram the mobile experience into a traditional desktop environment (mouse and keyboard driven with windows paradigm). IOS and Android have not embraced desktop paradigm. We simply need a unified SDK to support both experiences and the store downloads the appropriate assets. We're beginning to see somewhat of these concepts with foldables phone coming into the market.
I'm browsing from a Pixel 9 phone running GraphenOS phone, plugged into a 4K monitor, and paired with a bluetooth Logitech MX Vertical mouse and a MX Keys Mini keyboard. Works prefect. I don't miss my Macbook Air M5 much.
Apple having shown that the same CPU they use in some iPhones and iPads, Apple A18 Pro, worked perfectly well to build a laptop around running macOS, the MacBook Neo, should take the logical next leap in making an iPhone/laptop blend.
Make an iPhone and corresponding docking station, where the docking station is a MacBook shell + screen + touchpad + keyboard + battery that you slot the iPhone into in order to use the iPhone as a laptop. The slot you push the iPhone into would be reminiscent of the PCMCIA slots of old, but having the dimensions of the iPhone and connecting via ThunderBolt 5. When slotted into the shell, no part of the iPhone will extend outside of the shell. To eject, you push it in slightly and it pops out same way you push on a microSD card to eject it from many devices.
I would very much like one of those, and have done for years. Like the old PowerBook Duos, where you slotted the laptop into a docking station for extra ports, graphics etc.
That's sort of the point of the Googlebooks. They run Android internally, and then to get Android to support Googlebooks, they had to add/improve things like multi-window support, very large monitors, keyboards, mouse support, etc.
If you have a USB dock that your keyboard/mouse/display is plugged in to, you should be able to stick it in your Pixel phone's USB jack and get a desktop experience. Some of my team would actually test keyboard support that way, by plugging a keyboard into a tablet.
Android actually does have a desktop mode when you connect an external display. I'm not sure how much this is standardized / merged into AOSP, but I use it with my stock Pixel 10 Pro.
I would describe the experience as... passable. Historically it was quite glitchy but recent OS updates have improved it. The biggest issues resolve around apps which do not scale their UIs correctly.
From what I read that's the entire point of the whole Googlebook replacing Chromebook thing. The whole desktop is based on Android so all android phone and tablet apps are native. Naturally there will be SDK changes as some apps release versions optimized for desktop.
Google probably wants it so they can extend their app store empire to desktop apps and games.
Also technically they can only break the promise by not providing the support in 8 years, which we cannot know until 8 years from now. Right now it's just a claim that some support won't be available after 8 years.
So, if I read that correctly, they're promising that whatever Chromebooks run in 2035-6 will work on the hardware that was sold with ChromeOS in 25-26. And there'll be an upgrade path. Right? That's what they're saying?
...Unless I'm misunderstanding, I don't think any promises were broken here. Google said they would provide ten years of software updates. Now they're saying existing ChromeOS devices will be upgraded to the new "GoogleOS" within that ten year window, they will continue to receive said updates.
This is annoying if you don't like GoogleOS, but also par for the course. You can't stay on iOS 26 and continue to receive security updates, you have to upgrade to iOS 27.
> For qualifying devices purchased today whose 10-year support lifecycle extends beyond 2034, Google is committed to supporting your transition to Googlebook OS, with many devices offering direct migration paths
The word "many" feels like it's pretty much explicitly saying it's not "all". If it's not "all" then I'd say the promises were broken.
It's possible those devices will offer indirect migration paths (e.g. you have to reinstall the OS). While annoying/inconvenient, that would probably still qualify as keeping the promise in my book.
It's not just security updates, there's also whether all the device management tools and techniques, training and institutional knowledge, and customer acceptance will carry over to the new OS. Whether the devices that are within AUE and receive the update are going to run the new operating system well, or they're going to languish with poor performance or broken drivers that will never get another look from the manufacturer because they're 2 generations behind in a vast sea of models and individual configurations.
I also can't find anything online to do with what they're going to do to Chrome OS Flex, so thank goodness I didn't set it up for my mum who was sick to death of Windows 11.
While your point is reasonable and valid, there was also no guarantee that ChromeOS would keep these management tools, and that the techniques, training and knowledge stay relevent years from now.
I'm imagining a transition akin to mac os 9 -> X or WinXP -> win 7. The OS having the same name and being technically in the same lineage can mean very little for compatibility.
When iOS 27 became available, people were given a choice to upgrade to 27, or to 26.7. I know this because I upgraded my personal phone to 27, and my work phone to 26.7.
You originally said iOS 16. The recent iOS 16 update was only for older devices.
Apple typically continues releasing updates for n-1 iOS for a few months. After that limited window, updates are only released for the latest iOS, except for devices which are too old to run the latest iOS, which continue receiving updates on the last-compatible iOS for a couple of years.
I understand the various justifications for why school districts choose Chromebooks, but those devices were... dying since the day they were born. In other words, I'd confidently bet that the useful life of any school issued Chromebook ends the very second the student no longer needs it for school (whatever the reason may be.) I'd be just as confident that the vast majority also see zero use aside from directly pertinent school tasks. Basically the technological equivalent of No Child Left Behind.
The widespread usage of laptops in schools is a massive mistake in the first place. The schools using chromebooks has the same root cause, myopic thinking by administrators.
When I left $DAYJOB-1 they let me keep my Dell Latitude 7270. I have upgraded its RAM to 16GB (the max it takes) and downgraded to a smaller SSD.
It runs ChromeOS Flex and it runs it very quickly indeed. It's a quad-core Core i7, so it should.
This 10YO laptop is in daily use and it runs well enough that an EOL for ChromeOS that is 8Y away is a concern for me. I expect the laptop will still be in use then; I still have several 15Y old Thinkpads in frequent use.
It's funny, I bought a tower computer 13 years ago that is my homelab server and it is still going strong -- two times I have migrated the storage array to new disks and I probably should do it again but I have not looked at the pricing. Much younger i3 machines became e-waste pretty quickly, but a quality PC can keep going and going.
As per usual, this is a tech industry product naming mess, with a layer of technology consolidation spread on top.
It probably means that low spec hardware won't support whatever they're calling the operating system for a higher spec laptops. Whatever they call it it's an evolution of ChromeOS with an Android runtime, which is nothing new in Google's products.
They seem to be replacing it with what is essentially desktop Android (and also making it open source, so there should be a ChromeOS Flex alternative even if Google isn't the one running it)
I stopped buying Chromebooks and switched to MacBooks after my fantastic Samsung Chromebook Plus ARM units stopped getting updates after a few years, around the same time the 10 year from release support commitment for new devices was made.
Unfortunately Samsung no longer make Chromebooks, they had some fantastic hardware.
I guess we should just not trust tech companies for long term support of the stuff they make. How do they think they'll fare after squandering goodwill with shit like this?
My students Chromebooks can't run python online. 1 tab. Ad riddled. IT won't install ad blocker. The misery so many of us deal with. I'm happy has to know. Depressing.
Why? They haven't killed anything, they have reduced support from 10 years to 8.
Chromebooks tend to be cheap relative to other laptops so 8 years isn't bad. Android tablets and Phones costing 2 or 3 times a chrome book have been promised 7 years for Android.
Googlebook is Android with the ChromeOS application stack ported on top of it. ChromeOS hosts Android apps in a compatibility subsystem. They basically just turned it upside-down and shook it.
And this is why when Pixel phones started promising 7 years of support, everyone with a brain said “uh huh, suuuure” and kept buying iPhones which DO deliver that.
So far so good for the rest of us without brains. Pixel 6 got it's full 5 years of promised support. We're hoping it's cheaper to provide the full promised 7 years of support than to pay the class action lawyers.
I use my kids' former high school Chromebook while on the road with great satisfaction. It's small (11.6 inches) which allows for easy lap operation. It's touchscreen which also helps when sitting in a car with the laptop close to your body. It's "tough" (IP52 certification) and was thoroughly abused by my kid for 4 years with almost no damage besides scuffs.
She hated it but I LOVE it and will look for a similar form factor when it finally dies which will 100% come after Google ends support.
Lastly, I often use it to remotely control my primary Windows PC which makes it even MORE useful.
I did 10-12 years ago. Google was cool back then. I bought them for family when I wanted something cheap that would work and not be a support burden. Plus, it was (kinda) Gentoo based! But yeah, stopped doing that 5-6 years ago. Now I go with old Thinkpads and Bluefin.
ChromeOS is targeted to and adopted by large organizations like enterprises and governments and school districts, because it is extremely easy to manage and has maybe 0.2% as many headaches as Windows or Mac.
I honestly wonder if "many devices offering direct migration paths" actually means that new Googlebook devices will have migration assistants.
Large organisations don’t buy a single batch of machines then call it a day. If an organisation standardised on Chromebooks because of the support period, they will still need to buy new machines and those won’t get the support period they had expected.

It’s straight-up false advertising and they should be held accountable.
I would prefer the Microsoft way, where they double the cost every few years with extended support, super duper extended support, and more.
Then when my organization inevitably fucks up the migration we can pay money to bail ourselves out rather than being out of compliance.
Can you quote the part of my comment that you think says that?
From my understanding of the article, it sounds like ChromeOS support is getting pared back for those devices, but the devices themselves should still be supported, albeit via a (planned but not yet in existence) migration path to GooglebookOS.
Although tbh, I've not really used either in anger, so I can't really comment on if that is a raw deal or not. (Beyond the usual dislike of change that will always be encountered).
So agreed, that sounds reasonable.

Google appears to be especially bad at this (looking at you, auto-dubbing YouTube) and countless others fail as well.
What is it though? Is it a harder problem than I think it is or is Conway's law getting the better of the G?
It probably reflects incentives within the company
Gemini answers me in Mandarin quite often. In case their is any wonder about me: I grew up in the US and my first language is English.
It anticipated the outcome of the Taiwan conflict. /S
Google doesn't hire people who actually enjoy doing maintenance.
In fact lately it seems like nobody hires for this.
Apparently, you aren't meant to use data, measure anything, or look at the actual end result of how software is really being released. Line Go Up
Extremly sarcastic take but - shouldn't the LLMs in 6 year not powerful enough that every user can maintain ChromeOS support themselves?
At least when we get monthly news about how powerful the new models of the openai and anthropic are.
Maybe in 5 years we're all sitting in water tanks producting energy for the ai machine's like in matrix.
Google's internal tooling for this is actually way behind what's available to the general public (they just got access to Claude though!)
And their internal stuff is hard for public LLMs to understand
Uh oh. I watched Person of Interest, I know how this goes down.
Imagine Anthropic for using Gemini internally and anticipating for it
No. If your engineers can produce more ROI working on another product, it does not matter that now they are 10x more efficient. They will also be 10x in the other, more worth it product
I assume the support range is determined by firmware updates. I know ChromeOS struggled with supporting devices whose components no longer received support.
Google will now make 10x the vapourware they have no intention of maintaining.
Gemini is good only at benchmarks. In actual usage it sometimes approaches chatjimmy in quality
> it’s hard to imagine many Chromebooks currently in service or acquired in the next year or two will still be in service come 2034
While there won't be many there definitely will be some; I know of an ~8 year old Chromebook currently in active use.
You can't just expect things to last years! Building stuff to last only benefits society and customers, it does nothing for shareholders!
Ending is better than mending!
Mending is anti-american and anti-freedom!
Imagine if the pyramids were built by modern contractors... They wouldn't last a decade.
They'd probably have a subscription model.

Exactly.
Don't believe their lies.
It's not a ton different on the Windows/android side. The TPM 2.0 requirement for Windows 11 took a lot of our work PCs out of the rotation.
You can just install an open source distro. The environmental impact is user laziness (which is pretty much true of all environmental impact)
[dead]
Schools, sadly for the students.
I work in e-waste recycling, and I can assure everyone that many schools issue Chromebooks to students.
Chromebooks don't last anywhere close to 10 years in school; they get far too much abuse.
I also have one C720 - touch screen and 4Gb Ram plus 128G SSD.
Amazing device for it’s price!
Refurbished, perhaps? Or, again, with the intention of making them last far longer than Google would want?
Indeed, a big failure of imagination
Yea my Thinkpad 11e is still going and running software. That's 12 years old, now.
I use my 2016 pixelbook every day. Best laptop ever made. I have a small stack of them and intend to retrofit them as needed.
Indeed.
I know of two "best laptops ever made":
Drew DeVault says it's the X200:
https://drewdevault.com/blog/Fucking-laptops/
« The best laptop ever made is the ThinkPad X200, and I have two of them. »
He has a very strong case. I own one. It is certainly one of the best ever.
On the other hand, Brad Taunt says it is the X220:
https://btxx.org/posts/x220/
« The X220 ThinkPad is the greatest laptop ever made and you’re wrong if you think otherwise. »
Ulaş Türkmen agrees:
https://okigiveup.net/blog/why-thinkpad-x220-is-the-best-lap...
I tried one, and nearly bought one from a friend a couple of years ago, but I can't get over the horrible chiclet keyboard.
Life is too short for modding machines I want to be daily drivers, like fitting an X220 keyboard to it.
Good Speakers, Oled Screen Good Keyboard, 32GB ram+
That's my 4 minimum requirements for a laptop nowadays. As I don't just work on my laptops, but also listen to music/podcasts and watch video content.
Good keyboard is my #1.
YMMV, I guess.
I think they mean save money on hardware based on the previous part of the sentence
> I still don't get the point of Chromebooks
Freedom == more rope for the user to strangle themselves. Most casual users don't care for that
The point is that kids can't break the OS.
Schools and boomers
For schools it can be locked down with group policies, for boomers it's just a machine to use a web browser
Of course they are.
One more datapoint to reference in the future when evaluating Google's long term promises and commitments. "No, we mean it this time."
It seems myopic especially if Gemini is supposed to reduce labor costs with software development. 2034-36 would only be security updates.
So for new devices, they will support ChromeOS for another 8 years and then offer an upgrade to Googlebook OS.
I get that this is not 10 years support for ChromeOS. But it is 10 years of supported software upgrades for these devices.
Perhaps the real issue is not the OS that runs on the devices themselves but support for the existing device management approach.
This is my dream, just waiting for the motorola with a stronger cpu/gpu and hopefully greater than 1080p resolution from AOSP Desktop Mode.
Maybe they could call it an iPhone Duo. Oh wait…
Yeah, but why can't this be just stock part of Android? We should not need a separate OS or device to have this kind of experience.
It is a stock part of Android. You can plug your Android phone into an external display and you'll get an experience like the Googlebook.
Samsung DEX is basically this you can turn your phone into a desktop
Ubuntu tried that at some point, but it never took off as a mobile OS.
Intentionally misleading title.
They are changing the support horizon for new sales only, not ending anything early.
Also technically they can only break the promise by not providing the support in 8 years, which we cannot know until 8 years from now. Right now it's just a claim that some support won't be available after 8 years.
It also sounds like these devices _will be supported_ but not by updating ChromeOS, instead by upgrading to Googlebook OS.
> It also sounds like "many of" these devices will be supported but not by updating ChromeOS, instead by sidegrading to Googlebook OS.
FTFY
So, if I read that correctly, they're promising that whatever Chromebooks run in 2035-6 will work on the hardware that was sold with ChromeOS in 25-26. And there'll be an upgrade path. Right? That's what they're saying?
> The newer Googlebook range uses more powerful processors than their predecessors, plus a new OS called Googlebook OS … $899
Gobbledegook. Planned obsolescence? This is accelerated obsolescence!
Why would anyone go for that instead of a MacBook Neo or even an iPad?
For context: iOS devices typically receive about 6.5 years of updates. macOS devices typically receive 6 to 8 years of updates.
...Unless I'm misunderstanding, I don't think any promises were broken here.
I would agree but Google's wording is
> For qualifying devices purchased today whose 10-year support lifecycle extends beyond 2034, Google is committed to supporting your transition to Googlebook OS, with many devices offering direct migration paths
> You can't stay on iOS 26 and continue to receive security updates, you have to upgrade to iOS 27.
But then saying iOS 26 is still supported, would be a lie?
You can't stay on iOS 26 and continue to receive security updates, you have to upgrade to iOS 27.
Not a great comparison, since iOS 16 (not 26) received a security update just a few months ago.
Only devices that can't run anything newer got that update. There is no choice available.
This is false. In fact, iOS 26 got an update just yesterday.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_26
When iOS 27 became available, people were given a choice to upgrade to 27, or to 26.7. I know this because I upgraded my personal phone to 27, and my work phone to 26.7.
You may have missed the button, but it was there.
Can a Chromebook even last 10 years? Aren’t they made from cheaper materials to get the cheaper price points?
And Gemini AI mixed in.
Are they planning on replacing ChromeOS Flex? It has been a fantastic choice for me to put onto older computers that some relatives own.
They seem to be replacing it with what is essentially desktop Android (and also making it open source, so there should be a ChromeOS Flex alternative even if Google isn't the one running it)
Huh. Apparently if you Google "GoogleBook", the first 2 results aren't for GoogleBook but for Google Books.
This seems to be about ending support for ChromeOS early, but they also have a new OS that might run on the same machines?
And assuming the new OS also runs Chrome, Chromebook users might not see that much of a difference.
Old Chromebooks can still be salvaged by just installing Linux/FydeOS on them.
These new "googlebooks" (what a name), with their fancy gimmick chips, won't offer the same liberty.
I guess we should just not trust tech companies for long term support of the stuff they make. How do they think they'll fare after squandering goodwill with shit like this?
My Father in Law had one that ran out of support, but its been way over 10 years, anyone install a different distro over theirs?
I didn't know that they would end support for ChromeOS after releasing googlebooks.
Are there still cheap Chrome box that can be rooted to install other Linux?
https://docs.mrchromebox.tech/docs/supported-devices.
Sure, take your pick
My students Chromebooks can't run python online. 1 tab. Ad riddled. IT won't install ad blocker. The misery so many of us deal with. I'm happy has to know. Depressing.
https://pyscript.net/ ?
What are you using?
make your own html editor with github... and you teach tech?
You go teach tech for $60k a year where the median rent is $4k for a 1 bedroom. Exactly
I'm sorry about your financial problems, Dennis, I really am, but they are your problems.
- John Hammond
I don't know why $60k a year would make me think github is something you make a text editor out of.
https://killedbygoogle.com
(no longer updated?) https://gcemetery.co
Add it to the pile.
https://killedbygoogle.com/
Why? They haven't killed anything, they have reduced support from 10 years to 8.
Chromebooks tend to be cheap relative to other laptops so 8 years isn't bad. Android tablets and Phones costing 2 or 3 times a chrome book have been promised 7 years for Android.
ChromeOS (Gentoo-based) is to die, be replaced by Googlebook OS (Android-based).
Google really speed running the "be evil" playbook recently.
What the hell is the actual difference between ChromeOS and GooglebookOS?
Googlebook is Android with the ChromeOS application stack ported on top of it. ChromeOS hosts Android apps in a compatibility subsystem. They basically just turned it upside-down and shook it.
Yet another market that is never going to trust Google with long term support for a product again!
Newer Chromebooks will be able to migrate to Googlebook OS, that replaces ChromeOS.
[dead]
And this is why when Pixel phones started promising 7 years of support, everyone with a brain said “uh huh, suuuure” and kept buying iPhones which DO deliver that.
So far so good for the rest of us without brains. Pixel 6 got it's full 5 years of promised support. We're hoping it's cheaper to provide the full promised 7 years of support than to pay the class action lawyers.
I guess we will see by October 2030. They'd be getting a class action lawsuit for clear fake marketing.
https://grapheneos.org/faq#device-lifetime
It doesn't seem like they are ending support for updated software on these devices before 10 years, it will just be different software.
Why the hell anyone bought into the Chromebook idea I don’t know. Possibly saw the price and thought they’d get away with it.
I nearly bought a Chromebook last month for my son to do homework on.
He already has a PS5 and so doesn’t need the laptop for anything more than running Chrome.
In the end I managed to repurpose an existing laptop. But a Chromebook was a serious consideration for a little while.
ChromeOS is targeted to and adopted by large organizations like enterprises and governments and school districts, because it is extremely easy to manage and has maybe 0.2% as many headaches as Windows or Mac.
