It wasn’t obvious to me what problem this solves, might just be I’m not the target audience.

I almost stopped reading here. I'm not a Nix user at all, so I don't know if it's needed in the first place.
With all due respect for the work done here, to me, it just feels like another "let's rewrite it in rust" project.
