Super idea. Like an hourglass that never escapes your notice. I typically have to set two timers when I use timers: one actual timer, and a supplementary timer that dings when it's 1/3 time left on the real timer. Otherwise there's no use if I only have one abrupt ding... I can't correct course before my timer expires.
I made something similar to OP a while back, but added an effect which blurs the screen for a configurable amount of time to force myself to stop whatever I'm doing and step away and reevaluate what I'm doing.
I quickly realised I had to put a quick warning blur so I don't get locked out in the middle of a call, but other than that its been working well for me.

personally, I am always trying to time box tasks, to drive sense of urgency.
The thin progress line under the menu bar is a really nice touch.
