In the US, phone numbers used to be locked in similar to this too. But then regulations changed and now everyone can port their phone number away to some other providers.
I suspect we will eventually bifurcate as a society - those that are inextricably online, abstracted away from reality, and those that say "to hell with this, I'm looking elsewhere" and hit the power button.
